Projection is the measurable radius around your body where others can smell your fragrance without entering your personal space, typically 1 to 4 feet. The physics of projection (and why most advice ignores the actual science)

I spend half my time in our Dubai lab measuring vapor pressure curves, and the explanation you find on most fragrance blogs is backwards. Projection is not about "strength" or how much you spray. It's molecular physics.

When I formulate a fragrance, I'm selecting molecules based on their vapor pressure at skin temperature (roughly 32°C). High vapor pressure means the molecule evaporates quickly into the air around you. That's projection. Low vapor pressure means it clings to your skin. That's longevity. The two are usually inversions of each other, which is why the most projecting fragrances often die fastest and the longest-lasting tend to sit close to skin after the first hour.

Projection happens in the first 15 to 90 minutes. You apply the fragrance, your skin warms it, the lightest molecules lift off and form a scent cloud. The radius of that cloud depends on three factors: the volatility of the top and heart notes, the concentration of aromachemicals in the formula, and the surface area you've covered. That's it. Skin chemistry matters far less than the internet wants you to believe.

Real example from the bench: iso E super (a common woody molecule) has a vapor pressure of about 0.01 mmHg at 25°C. Linalool (lavender, citrus) is 0.16 mmHg. That 16x difference is why a citrus cologne announces itself across a room and a woody skin scent stays intimate. I'm not choosing notes for their smell alone. I'm engineering a vapor pressure profile.

Addax, our saffron and oud oriental, projects 2 to 3 feet for the first two hours because the saffron (safranal) and jasmine (benzyl acetate) sit in that sweet spot of moderate-high volatility, then the leather and real oud anchor it close for another eight hours. It shares similar notes to Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade, but we use a higher concentration of the saffron headspace and natural oud from our Dubai suppliers rather than synthetic oud molecules, which changes the projection curve. Ours blooms faster in the first 30 minutes, Ombre Nomade has a more linear, controlled release. Neither is better. Different tools.

Projection vs. sillage vs. longevity (the three are not interchangeable)

Every fragrance has three performance dimensions, and conflating them causes half the complaints I see online.

Projection is the radius. How far from your body can someone standing still smell you? Measured in feet or arm's lengths. Peaks in the first hour, decays as the volatile molecules evaporate.

Sillage is the trail. The scent you leave behind as you move through a space. It's projection over time, in motion. Sillage can persist even when projection has dropped, because you're depositing molecules on surfaces and in air currents as you walk.

Longevity is duration. How many hours does anything remain detectable on your skin, even if you have to press your nose to your wrist? This is governed by the base notes, the fixatives, and how slowly they evaporate or bind to skin proteins.

A fragrance can have monster projection for 30 minutes and die completely by hour two (many citrus colognes). Or it can project modestly but last 12 hours as a skin scent (most musks and woods). Or it can do both (Amouage Interlude, which is why it costs £300/$400).

In our catalog, Veritas Classic Brown is the longevity champion (10+ hours of detectability) but moderate projection (2 feet, first 90 minutes). The cinnamon and nutmeg give it an immediate presence, then the tonka and sandalwood lock it down. It shares similar notes to Carolina Herrera Bad Boy, but we load the base with a higher ratio of coumarin (the main longevity molecule in tonka) and Australian sandalwood oil, so it outlasts the original by about two hours in my side-by-side tests. The tradeoff: CH Bad Boy projects slightly farther in the opening because of their apple and pepper burst. Pick based on your need.

What controls projection (and what doesn't)

Here's what actually moves the needle, ranked by effect size.

1. Concentration (eau de parfum vs. eau de toilette vs. parfum). More aromachemicals per milliliter equals more molecules available to evaporate. An eau de parfum (12 to 18% concentration) will project farther than an eau de toilette (8 to 12%) of the same formula. Parfum (20%+) should project even more, but often doesn't, because parfum formulas are rebalanced with heavier base notes for richness, which actually reduces projection while increasing longevity. This is why many parfums feel quieter than their EdP siblings.

2. Molecular weight and volatility of the notes. Citrus (limonene, linalool) and aldehydes are light and evaporate fast: high projection, short life. Musks, ambers, woods (galaxolide, iso E super, cedarwood) are heavy and cling: low projection, long life. Florals and spices (rose oxide, eugenol, coumarin) sit in the middle.

When I want projection, I front-load the top 30% of the formula with volatile molecules. Noctis, our marine aquatic, opens with salted bergamot (linalyl acetate, limonene) and marine aldehydes (Calone, Floralozone) that project 3 feet for the first hour. It shares similar notes to Orto Parisi Megamare, but Megamare uses a denser concentration of ambergris synthetics (Ambrox, Cetalox) in the heart, which gives it a thicker, closer-to-skin presence after 30 minutes. Ours stays brighter and more lifted because we use a higher ratio of the aldehyde layer. If you want a marine scent that announces itself in a meeting, Noctis. If you want one that feels like expensive skin, Megamare is the honest answer.

3. Application surface area. Spray your chest and both wrists: you've covered maybe 20 square inches. Spray chest, wrists, neck, inner elbows and the small of your back: you've tripled the evaporative surface. More surface equals more projection, linearly. This is the easiest lever to pull and no one uses it.

4. Skin temperature and hydration. Warmer skin evaporates fragrance faster (more projection, shorter longevity). This is why pulse points (wrists, neck, behind ears) are recommended: the blood vessels run close to the surface, raising local temperature by 1 to 2°C. Hydrated skin holds fragrance longer, which paradoxically can reduce projection slightly in the first hour because the molecules bind to the moisture instead of evaporating, then they release slowly. If you want maximum projection, apply to dry skin on a warm day. If you want controlled, sustained projection, moisturize first.

5. Environment. Heat, humidity and air movement all increase projection by accelerating evaporation and dispersing molecules. A fragrance that projects 2 feet in an air-conditioned office will project 4 feet on a humid Dubai afternoon. Cold, dry, still air kills projection. This is why the same fragrance feels weak in winter.

What doesn't matter as much as you think: your diet, your skin's pH (the range is too narrow to affect volatility), whether you're male or female. Skin type (oily vs. dry) affects longevity more than projection.

A perfumer's note: how I balance projection for wearability

The technical challenge in commercial perfumery is not creating projection. That's easy. Load the formula with 30% Iso E Super, 20% Calone, 15% Hedione and you'll project across a subway car. The challenge is creating pleasant projection that doesn't choke the person next to you.

In our lab, I use a 60-minute projection test. I spray the fragrance on a blotter, let it sit for 5 minutes, then measure the scent radius at 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes in a controlled room (22°C, 50% humidity, no air movement). I want the 15-minute peak to be strong but not sharp, and I want at least 60% of that intensity remaining at 60 minutes. If the curve drops faster, I add a mid-weight floral or spice to bridge the gap between the volatile top and the heavy base. Rose oxide and clary sage are my go-to bridge molecules.

The other thing I watch: quality of projection. Some molecules project far but smell harsh or synthetic in the air (looking at you, Ambroxan overload). Others project beautifully. Natural jasmine absolute, even at low concentrations, has a presence that's disproportionate to its vapor pressure because of the indole and benzyl acetate. It smells alive in the air. That's why jasmine is worth its weight (and cost) in formulas designed to perform in public.

How to increase projection (and when you shouldn't)

If you want your fragrance to project more, here's the honest playbook.

1. Apply to more surface area. Chest, both wrists, neck, behind ears, inner elbows, small of back. You can double projection without changing anything else.

2. Apply to fabric. Fragrance lasts longer and projects farther from fabric (especially wool and cotton) than from skin, because the fibers hold and release the molecules slowly. Spray the inside of your collar, your scarf, the lining of your jacket. The tradeoff: you can't wash it off if you over-apply, and some fabrics stain (silk, suede). Test first.

3. Moisturize, then apply. Unscented lotion or petroleum jelly on your pulse points, let it absorb for 60 seconds, then spray. The occlusive layer slows evaporation, which extends projection over time (you get a flatter curve instead of a sharp peak). This works especially well for fragrances that bloom fast and die, like citruses.

4. Layer with matching products. Shower gel, lotion, then fragrance. You're not increasing projection per se, you're increasing the pool of molecules available to evaporate over the course of the day. Functionally the same result.

5. Spray, don't dab. Atomization creates a finer mist that covers more surface area. Dabbing from a bottle concentrates the fragrance in a small spot, which increases intensity at that spot but doesn't increase the scent radius.

When not to increase projection: job interviews, first dates, enclosed spaces (planes, elevators), any setting where you're within 3 feet of strangers for extended periods. The socially acceptable projection range is 1.5 to 3 feet. Beyond that, you're imposing.

Projection benchmarks (what's "good" and what's obnoxious)

Most of our catalog sits in the 2 to 3 foot range for the first 60 to 90 minutes, then settles to 1 to 2 feet. That's intentional. We're balancing presence with wearability.

Veritas Blue is our freshest, safest option for people worried about over-projecting. Lemon and apple up top, ambroxan and cedar in the base. It shares similar notes to Dior Sauvage, and the projection curve is nearly identical (2.5 feet peak, fades to skin-scent by hour 4). The difference is price: £39.99 ($39.99) vs. £90 ($120), and we use a slightly higher concentration of the Ambroxan (which gives ours a bit more warmth in the dry-down). Notes that project vs. notes that cling

Not all fragrance notes are equal in the air. Here's the short list of ingredients that project disproportionately well, and the ones that stay close no matter how much you use.

High-projection notes: - Citrus (lemon, bergamot, grapefruit): limonene and linalool evaporate instantly. - Aldehydes: soapy, waxy, ozonic. The backbone of Chanel No. 5's projection. - Marine/aquatic notes (Calone, Floralozone): synthetic, very volatile, love them or hate them. - Lavender and aromatic herbs (linalool, linalyl acetate). - Certain spices: nutmeg, cardamom, pink pepper (the volatile terpenes). - Ambroxan and its cousins (Cetalox, Ambrofix): moderate-weight but extremely diffusive. A little goes far.

Low-projection notes: - Musks (galaxolide, habanolide): heavy, skin-clinging by design. - Vanilla and tonka (coumarin, vanillin): sweet, dense, low vapor pressure. - Sandalwood, cedarwood (the natural oils, not the synthetics): creamy, heavy. - Leather (birch tar, styrax, certain quinolines): thick, resinous. - Patchouli and vetiver (the earth-oil side): grounding, low-lift. - Oud (real agarwood oil): dense, resinous, projects moderately but mostly in close range.

When you see a fragrance described as "fresh and long-lasting," check the notes. If it's heavy on citrus with a big vanilla base, the projection will collapse after an hour. If it's aromatic lavender over woody ambers, you'll get sustained moderate projection for hours. The note pyramid tells you the performance curve.

Skin type, body chemistry and other variables (how much do they actually matter?)

The fragrance community loves to blame skin chemistry for everything. "It doesn't last on me, must be my skin." Sometimes that's true. Mostly it's not.

Oily vs. dry skin: oily skin holds fragrance longer because the oils absorb and slowly release the fragrance molecules. Projection can be slightly lower in the first hour because the molecules are busy binding to the sebum, but longevity is significantly better. Dry skin lets the fragrance evaporate quickly (higher initial projection, shorter life). The fix: moisturize if you have dry skin.

Body temperature: if you run hot (you sweat easily, you're always warm), fragrance will evaporate faster off your skin. More projection, less longevity. If you run cold, the opposite. This is real but subtle, maybe a 10 to 20% difference in performance.

Hormones and medication: some medications (particularly those affecting liver enzymes or body odor) can interact with fragrance molecules. Extremely rare and unpredictable. If every fragrance smells wrong on you, this might be the culprit, but it's not common.

Diet: the idea that eating garlic or red meat changes how fragrance smells on you is mostly myth. Your sweat and sebum composition can change slightly with diet, but the effect on fragrance is minimal. The bigger issue: if you smell (body odor), fragrance won't mask it, it'll mix with it. Shower first.

The honest answer is that skin chemistry accounts for maybe 15% of the performance variation between people. The other 85% is application technique, the fragrance formula itself, and environmental conditions. If a fragrance has weak projection on you, try applying more of it to more surface area before you blame your skin.

Testing projection accurately (because you're nose-blind to your own scent)

This is the hardest part of managing projection: after 15 minutes, you can't smell yourself accurately. Your olfactory receptors fatigue (it's called adaptation), and the scent that's projecting 3 feet to everyone else has disappeared to you. This is why people over-apply.

The elbow test: stick your arm straight out to the side, parallel to the ground. Turn your head away, wait 5 seconds, then turn back and sniff. If you can smell your wrist fragrance from that distance (roughly 2 feet), it's projecting. If you have to bring your wrist closer, it's not. Do this at 15 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours and 4 hours after application to map your projection curve.

The friend test: ask someone you trust to tell you when they first smell you as they approach. Measure the distance. Do this in a neutral environment (not outdoors in wind, not in a room full of other smells). Most people are shocked the first time they do this, because their fragrance projects farther than they think.

The fabric test: spray a scarf or cloth from 6 inches, let it dry for 2 minutes, then have someone else hold it at arm's length. If they can clearly identify the scent at 2+ feet, the fragrance has good projection. If they have to bring it closer, it's moderate to low.

The other side of this: if you want to smell your fragrance all day, you're going to over-apply. Projection is for other people. If you want olfactory feedback for yourself, apply a small amount to the back of your hand or your scarf, where you can bring it to your nose intentionally.

FAQ

Does projection decrease as a fragrance ages on your skin?

Yes, always. Projection peaks in the first 15 to 60 minutes (the "opening"), when the lightest, most volatile molecules evaporate. As those burn off, the mid-weight heart notes take over (less projection, more complexity), and eventually only the heavy base notes remain (minimal projection, maximum longevity). A fragrance that projects 3 feet in the first hour might drop to 1 foot by hour three and become a skin scent by hour five. This is normal and by design. If you want sustained projection all day, you need to reapply, or choose a fragrance with a flatter performance curve (more linear, less evolution).

Can I reduce projection if a fragrance is too strong?

Yes. Apply to skin only (avoid fabric). Apply to fewer spots (one wrist instead of chest, wrists and neck). Apply to the small of your back or behind your knees, where the fragrance will rise slowly and stay closer to your body. Or apply after you get dressed, so the fragrance sits on top of clothing barriers instead of radiating directly from warm skin. The nuclear option: spray into the air and walk through the mist, which deposits a light, even layer instead of concentrated spots. You'll sacrifice some performance, but you'll avoid choking your coworkers.

Do women's fragrances project less than men's?

No, not inherently. Projection is determined by the formula (concentration, note selection, molecular engineering), not the gender marketing. Plenty of women's fragrances project strongly (Chanel Coco Mademoiselle, Lancôme La Vie Est Belle), and plenty of men's fragrances are skin scents (Dior Homme Intense, Terre d'Hermès Eau Très Fraîche). The stereotype exists because many modern women's florals are formulated to be office-appropriate (moderate projection), while many men's sport and aquatic fragrances are intentionally loud. But it's not a rule, it's a trend. Judge the fragrance, not the label.
